The European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA), which represents over 90 % of European printing ink manufacturers, has issued a statement addressing the impact of ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East on the sector’s supply chain. The association is closely monitoring disruptions that have resulted in extended transit times, increased freight costs, and higher energy prices.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global shipping, has seen significant disruptions, forcing chemical feedstock shipments to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope. This detour adds 10-14 days to delivery schedules, affecting raw materials essential for ink production, including solvents, binders, resins, and additives. Furthermore, war-risk insurance premiums and freight rates have seen sharp increases, with air freight likewise impacted due to altered transport flows and restricted regional airspace.

Rising costs and production challenges
The instability has pushed Brent crude oil prices above USD 100 per barrel, driving up costs for petrochemical derivatives vital to printing ink formulations. Energy-intensive production processes may also face additional cost pressures as gas and electricity rates fluctuate in response to regional tensions.

Cornelia Tietz, Director of EuPIA, emphasised the association’s commitment to resilience and collaboration: “EuPIA is in active dialogue with its members and partner associations to track the evolving impact of this situation on our sector. We are committed to keeping members informed and to advocating for the conditions that support supply security for European printing ink producers.”

Adapting to supply chain complexities
EuPIA is focused on innovation in sustainable materials to mitigate some of the challenges posed by supply chain uncertainties. The association underscores the adaptability of the printing ink sector as it navigates these disruptions while maintaining its commitment to health, safety, and regulatory compliance.
