The European Commission recently imposed definitive anti-dumping duties (ADD) on titanium dioxide from China following an investigation that showed that such imports from that country were causing damage to the European Union (EU) industry related to the chemical that employs almost 5,000.

Titanium dioxide is widely used as a white pigment in a variety of products and industries, including coatings, paints, plastics and paper laminates used in furniture.

The duties, which range from €0.25/kg to €0.74/kg, strike a fair balance between the need to protect the EU titanium dioxide industry from injurious dumping and the interests of users of the raw material in the bloc, the Commission said in a release.

In July 2024, the Commission imposed provisional ad valorem ADD on titanium dioxide from China, but adjusted the type and level of duties in response to comments from European users of the chemical.

An exemption from duties was also granted for imports of graphic titanium dioxide used in the production of printing inks, thereby aiming to further alleviate the effect of duties on European downstream companies.
